Destination Guide

The ultimate European river cruise guide.

Europe\'s cities, delivered to your doorstep.

A European river cruise is the most relaxed way to see the continent\'s heart: the ship docks in the center of each city, so you wake up in Vienna or Budapest and walk straight off the gangway into the old town.

River ships are small, intimate, and nearly all-inclusive, with meals, wine, and most excursions folded into the fare. The two great rivers, the Danube and the Rhine, anchor most first river cruises, with the Seine, Douro, and Rhône as beautiful alternatives. This guide covers the routes, the lines, and how river cruising compares with the ocean.

Best time to visit

Spring through fall, with a Christmas-sailing bonus.

The main river season runs from April through October. May, June, and September offer the best weather and the fullest excursion menus, with long daylight for castle-viewing days.

July and August are warm and lively, with school-holiday crowds in the big cities. Late September and October bring harvest colors in the vineyards and a quieter, golden feel along both rivers.

November and December bring the famous Christmas markets of Vienna, Budapest, Cologne, and Strasbourg, and river ships run special holiday itineraries that are among the most popular sailings of the year.

Cruise itineraries

Danube or Rhine, the two great rivers.

Most first river cruises choose between the Danube and the Rhine. Both sail in about a week, and both are all-inclusive and port-dense.

01

The Danube: Passau to Budapest

The classic first European river cruise

The classic Danube sailing runs from Passau, Germany, downstream to Budapest, Hungary, in about 8 days and 7 nights, calling at Linz, the Wachau Valley, Vienna, and Bratislava along the way. It is the most popular river itinerary in Europe, and it works equally well in reverse, from Budapest up to Passau.

Best for
First-time river cruisers who want grand capitals, castles, and a gentle, all-inclusive week.

02

The Rhine: Amsterdam to Basel

Best for castles, vineyards, and storybook scenery

The Rhine links the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Switzerland, with the Middle Rhine gorge between Koblenz and Rudesheim as its showpiece: hilltop castles and terraced vineyards around every bend. Sailings run from about 7 to 10 nights between Amsterdam and Basel, with Cologne, Strasbourg, and the Black Forest on many routes.

Best for
Travelers who want the Middle Rhine's castle-dotted gorges and wine-country stops.

Seine

A gentle northern-France cruise from Paris past Monet's gardens to the Normandy coast, with village stops in between.

Douro

Portugal's steep, terraced wine country from Porto into the Douro Valley, famous for port and valley views.

Rhône

Southern France from Lyon through Provence, with Roman ruins, lavender fields in season, and the Camargue wetlands.

Cruise lines

The four names that lead European rivers.

Four operators dominate European river cruising, and all four sail both the Danube and the Rhine. The differences come down to ship design, dining, and style.

Viking River

The largest river-cruise operator, with a consistent, all-inclusive feel across many ships and routes

AmaWaterways

Known for excellent food and wine, spacious ships, and strong ports and excursions

Avalon

Contemporary ships with wide suites and a flexible, comfortable onboard style

Uniworld

A more boutique, style-forward river fleet with a polished all-inclusive approach

Ports of call

Cities, not terminals.

The defining difference of river cruising is where the ship docks: in the heart of each city, steps from the old town. A few of the ports you will remember.

Vienna & Budapest

The Danube\'s two grand capitals: imperial palaces and coffee houses in Vienna, the Parliament and thermal baths in Budapest. Both are walkable from the river.

Cologne & Strasbourg

The Rhine\'s cathedral cities: Cologne\'s towering Gothic dome and Strasbourg\'s half-timbered Petite France quarter, with its European quarter and Christmas market.

The Wachau Valley

A UNESCO-listed stretch of the Danube between Melk and Krems: apricot orchards, terraced vineyards, and hilltop ruins, sailed in a single golden afternoon.

Rüdesheim & the Middle Rhine

The Rhine\'s castle gorge at its most storybook, with the wine town of Rüdesheim and the famous Drosselgasse at the heart of it.

Planning advice

Costs, cabins, and packing for the rivers.

River cruise fares sit at the higher end of the cruise spectrum because so much is included: meals, wine and beer with lunch and dinner, most excursions, and a hotel-like ship in the center of each city. The value is in the all-inclusive simplicity.

River ships are small, with no interior cabins and no sea days. Every cabin has a window or balcony, and the scenery changes constantly, so a French balcony or full balcony is worth the upgrade.

Pack for cobblestones and layers: comfortable walking shoes, a light rain jacket, and smart-casual outfits for dinner. There is no formal night on most river lines.

This region attracts higher-value river cruise bookings and customized European extensions, so it pairs naturally with pre- and post-cruise hotel stays, rail travel, and land tours arranged by your Destination Engineer.

Your Destination Engineer can match you to the right river, ship, and cabin, and pair the sailing with customized European extensions, from a few nights in Paris to a rail journey through the Alps. Planning is always complimentary.
