Destination Guide

The ultimate South Pacific cruise & vacation guide.

Bora Bora with Mount Otemanu rising above a turquoise lagoon and overwater bungalows

The farthest shores, worth every mile.

The South Pacific is the cruise world\'s most beautiful distance: Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, and Fiji, islands whose names alone conjure lagoons, overwater bungalows, and some of the best snorkeling on earth.

Because the region is remote, most travelers reach it by combining a flight with a small-ship cruise or a resort stay, or both. The cruising here is intimate and premium, and the reward is a week of lagoon days that no other destination can match. This guide covers the routes, the islands, and the lines that sail them.

Best time to visit

May through October is the sweet spot.

The South Pacific\'s dry season runs May through October: cooler, sunnier days, calmer lagoons, and the best visibility for snorkeling and diving. This is the peak window, with the fullest ships and the highest fares.

November through April is the warmer, wetter season, with lower fares and fewer travelers. Rain usually arrives in short tropical showers rather than all-day gray, and itineraries are planned around the region\'s weather patterns.

Whale season adds a bonus: humpbacks pass through Polynesian and Fijian waters from roughly July through October, and some cruises time their routes to the migration.

Cruise itineraries

French Polynesia, or the wider Pacific?

South Pacific cruises divide into the classic French Polynesia loop and the longer, more far-flung voyages that reach Fiji and beyond.

Tahiti & French Polynesia

Best for lagoons, overwater bungalows, and small-ship cruising

French Polynesia is the heart of South Pacific cruising. Seven-night Society Islands voyages sail from Papeete, Tahiti, through Moorea, Raiatea, Taha'a, and Bora Bora, with longer 10 to 14-night itineraries reaching the Tuamotu atolls, the Cook Islands, and the Marquesas. The ships are small, the lagoons are calm, and the scenery is unmatched.

02

Fiji & the wider South Pacific

Best for a longer, more far-flung voyage

Beyond French Polynesia, the South Pacific stretches to Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, and the Cook Islands. Bigger lines visit on longer voyages, often 12 nights or more, sometimes combining Tahiti and Fiji in a single open-jaw itinerary with calls at Suva, Lautoka, and the outer islands.

Best for
Adventurous travelers with time for longer crossings and less-visited islands.

Ports of call

The islands you came for.

A few names anchor every South Pacific conversation. Here is what each is best at.

Bora Bora

The South Pacific's most famous lagoon: Mount Otemanu rising over turquoise water, overwater bungalows, and world-class snorkeling and lagoon excursions.

Moorea

Jagged volcanic peaks, pineapple farms, and a calm lagoon just a short ferry from Tahiti. Many cruises call here for a beach or 4x4 safari day.

Tahiti & beyond

Papeete's markets and black-sand beaches, the Tuamotu atolls' diving, and Fiji's friendly islands and coral reefs for longer voyages.

Planning advice

Cruise or resort? Costs, cabins, and packing.

South Pacific cruises are a premium category: the region is remote, the ships are small, and fares sit at the higher end of the cruise spectrum. The value is in the all-inclusive ease and the lagoon days that a land itinerary cannot match.

The best season runs May through October, the dry, cooler winter of the South Pacific. November through April is warmer and wetter, with lower fares and the occasional tropical system to plan around.

Pack for water and warmth: swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard, and light cover-ups. A dry bag and water shoes earn their space on lagoon days.

A cruise and a resort stay both work in the South Pacific. The cruise moves you between islands with your hotel aboard; a resort like an overwater bungalow stay in Bora Bora or Moorea goes deeper in one place. Many travelers combine a short cruise with land nights.

Your Destination Engineer can compare a small-ship cruise, an overwater bungalow stay, or a combination of both, and handle the long-haul flights and connections that make the distance effortless. Planning is always complimentary.
